Wondering what to wear for your first surf lesson in Sydney? The good news: we provide the essentials, so there’s very little you need to organise. Here’s exactly what you’ll wear in the water, what to bring yourself, and how it changes with the seasons.

Do you need a wetsuit to surf in Sydney?

For lessons, yes — and we provide one. Even in summer, Sydney’s water is cool enough that a wetsuit keeps you warm, protects your skin from the sun and board, and helps you stay in the water comfortably while you learn. You don’t need to buy anything to get started.

What we provide

Every lesson includes the gear that matters: a soft, beginner-friendly surfboard, a wetsuit in your size, and a leg rope that keeps the board attached to you in the water. Our instructors fit you out on the day, so all you need to bring is yourself and a few small extras below.

What to bring yourself

Wear swimmers under your wetsuit, and bring a towel, a hat and reef-safe sunscreen for before and after your session, plus some drinking water. Leave jewellery and valuables at home or locked away. That’s genuinely all you need for surf lessons in Sydney with us.

Wetsuit thickness by season

Sydney’s water temperature shifts through the year, and the wetsuit we provide is matched to the conditions. As a rough guide: spring and summer (roughly September to March) call for a lighter spring suit or 2mm steamer, while the cooler autumn and winter months use a thicker 3/2mm full suit to keep you warm. Your instructor makes sure you’re in the right suit for the day.

What not to wear

Skip anything loose or heavy that will drag in the water, and avoid board shorts or a bikini on their own in cooler months — you’ll get cold quickly without a wetsuit. Sunglasses and jewellery are best left on the beach so you don’t lose them in the surf.

Frequently asked questions

Should I wear anything under a wetsuit?
Yes — swimmers or a rash vest underneath are comfortable and hygienic. The wetsuit goes on over the top.

Do kids need a wetsuit too?
Yes, and we provide kids’ wetsuits for our kids’ surf lessons in the right sizes.

What if it’s a hot summer day?
You’ll still wear a wetsuit or spring suit for sun protection and comfort, but a lighter one suited to warm conditions.

Do I need surf booties or gloves?
Not for beginner lessons at Sydney’s sandy beaches — bare feet are fine and give you a better feel for the board.
