Booked your first surf lesson in Sydney, or thinking about it? Here’s exactly what to expect on the day — from what to bring to how our instructors have you catching waves by the end of your session. No experience is needed, and everything is designed to get complete beginners standing up safely and having fun.
Do you need any experience?
None at all. Our beginner lessons are built for first-timers of all ages and fitness levels. If you’d like to understand the basics before you arrive, our learn to surf beginner’s guide walks through the fundamentals, but your instructor will cover everything you need on the day.
What to bring to your surf lesson
Keep it simple: swimmers to wear under your wetsuit, a towel, a hat and reef-safe sunscreen for before and after, and some drinking water. We provide the surfboard and a wetsuit, so there’s no gear to buy or hire. Leave valuables at home or locked away, and arrive about 15 minutes early so you’re ready for the beach briefing.
What happens during the lesson
Every lesson starts on the sand with a safety briefing and a short warm-up. Your instructor explains how to lie on the board, paddle, and “pop up” to your feet, and you’ll practise the movement on the beach first. Then it’s into the shallows to catch gentle whitewater waves, with your instructor guiding you the whole way. Because our coaches are fully qualified and the group sizes are kept small, you get plenty of individual attention — most first-timers are riding waves before the session ends.
How long is a lesson, and how big are the groups?
A standard lesson runs around two hours, including the beach briefing and time in the water. We run adult group lessons, kids’ lessons and one-on-one private lessons if you’d prefer focused coaching. Group lessons are a fun, social way to start, while private lessons suit anyone who wants to progress as quickly as possible.
Where do first lessons take place?
We teach at beginner-friendly beaches along Sydney’s Northern Beaches, where the waves are gentle and the conditions are ideal for learning. You can see all of our surf lesson locations and choose the one that’s most convenient for you — our instructors always position beginners in the safest, most forgiving part of the break.

Frequently asked questions
Will I actually stand up in my first lesson?
Most first-timers do. Catching gentle whitewater waves makes standing up much easier, and your instructor helps with timing and technique so you get the best possible chance on the day.
Is surfing safe for complete beginners?
Yes. Lessons begin in shallow water on soft beginner boards, with qualified instructors supervising at all times and choosing safe, beginner-friendly conditions.
Do I need to be a strong swimmer?
You should be comfortable and confident in the water, but you won’t be out of your depth in a beginner lesson. If you have any concerns, let your instructor know before you start.
Can kids do a first surf lesson?
Absolutely — we run dedicated kids’ surf lessons from age five, with instructors experienced in teaching young beginners.
What’s the best age to start surfing?
There’s no wrong age. We teach children from five years old right through to adults trying it for the first time — it’s never too late to learn.
