Visiting Sydney and want to catch a wave? You’re in the right place. Sydney is one of the best cities in the world to try surfing, with warm water, gentle beginner beaches and world-famous coastline — all within easy reach of the city. Here’s a visitor’s guide to surf lessons in Sydney with Manly Surf School.

Why Sydney is perfect for first-time surfers

Sydney’s Northern Beaches offer gentle, rolling waves, patrolled beaches and a relaxed surf culture — ideal for travellers trying surfing for the first time. Lessons run year-round, and wetsuits keep you warm even in the cooler months. If you’re brand new, start with our beginner’s guide to learning to surf.

Getting to us from the city

Our home beach, Manly Beach, is a scenic 30-minute ferry ride from Circular Quay in the heart of Sydney — one of the best-value trips in the city, with harbour views the whole way. We also run lessons at other beautiful beaches; see all our surf lesson locations.

What’s included

Everything you need is provided — a surfboard and wetsuit, plus friendly coaching from qualified, accredited instructors. Just bring swimmers, a towel, sunscreen and a sense of adventure. Most visitors start with a social group surf lesson, and if you’re here for a while, a multi-day surf camp is a great way to really get the hang of it.

Best time of year to surf in Sydney

You can surf in Sydney all year round. Summer (December to February) brings warm water and long days; autumn often has clean, gentle waves that are perfect for beginners; and wetsuits make winter and spring comfortable too. Whenever you visit, there’s a good chance to get in the water.
