Think you’ve left it too late to learn to surf? You haven’t. Adults of every age and fitness level start surfing every week — and it’s every bit as rewarding as it looks. Here’s what to know about adult surf lessons in Sydney with Manly Surf School.
Is it ever too late to learn to surf?
Not at all. We teach complete beginners in their 20s through to their 60s and beyond. With the right board, a gentle beach and a patient instructor, most adults stand up and ride a wave in their very first lesson. If you’d like to know what to expect first, read our beginner’s guide to learning to surf.
Group or private lessons?
Adults can choose whichever suits them. A group surf lesson is social, affordable and a great way to learn alongside others at the same level. Prefer focused, one-on-one coaching to progress faster? A private lesson lets you learn at your own pace. Not sure which is best value? Our guide to surf lesson prices breaks it down.
How fit do I need to be?
You don’t need to be super fit — just comfortable in the water. Surfing uses your whole body, so it’s a fun way to get active, and our instructors pitch each session to your ability. Beginner lessons happen in shallow, controlled conditions with plenty of support.
What you’ll need
Everything is provided — a surfboard and wetsuit included. Just bring swimmers, a towel, sunscreen, a hat and some water. And a willingness to have fun and fall off a few times along the way.
Frequently asked questions
Am I too old to learn to surf?
No. We regularly teach adults of all ages, including complete beginners in their 50s and 60s. Lessons are tailored to your ability and confidence in the water.
Do I need to be fit to take a surf lesson?
You should be comfortable in the water, but you don’t need to be especially fit. Surfing is a great, low-impact way to build fitness while having fun.
Should adults choose a group or private lesson?
Both work well. Group lessons are social and great value; private lessons offer focused, one-on-one coaching for faster progress.
How many lessons until I can surf on my own?
Most adults stand up in their first lesson. Becoming comfortable catching unbroken waves usually takes a handful of lessons or a multi-day program.
What should I bring to an adult surf lesson?
Swimmers, a towel, sunscreen, a hat and water. The surfboard and wetsuit are included.
